CD500 head unit upgrade/fixing

I am so happy with the Nakamichi CD500 head unit, the look, the sound quality, etc. But these units are also fragile. The head unit started not to read CDs. Yeah, I can easily replace it with a newer, cheaper one but they won’t match the interior that well and this is why I paid the high price for this used CD500. So choices that I had:

  • Fix it
  • Get another CD500 or CD700 head unit
  • Upgrade it

Getting it fix is the most intuitive choice, however, it is difficult to find someone who is capable of / willing to do it. It is also a challenge to find the laser head. Moreover, my previous experience of replacing the laser head of my Philips Discman is that it doesn’t last long

2nd choice – it is even more challenging to find a local edition vintage Nakamichi head unit in good condition here and they are bloody expensive if there are any. I paid that premium one and is hesitant to do it again

Upgrading it was the 3rd idea I had and is the path I opt for.

Guide the 2 cables to the bottom of the driver seat. I found it is the perfect place to put the upgrade component there.

Cable installation to the upgrade component

To do so, I need to use the cable push puller to get the cable through the mat

The Nakamichi CD Changer
The Nakamichi CD Changer

Yeah……I attach a Nakamichi CD changer to the head unit. In 80s and 90s of the last century, CD changers used to be a very expensive option for cars. I remember an audio brand had even produced an one-din 6-disc integrated CD player with changers. I used to look for it in order to reduce the hassle of all the cable installation. But it is said those products are mechanically unreliable.

The CD 500 has built-in CD changer control feature, though it only supports Nakamichi products only. I want to add the changer for a long time. As a result, it also took me a bit of time to find the compatible CD changer and for an used one, it is expensive. Anyway, it is a 5-disc changer and will read only CDs, not CD-ROM, CD-R. I need to buy one more copies of my favorite CDs for it. And the first one I bought is:
