The previous owner has replaced the factory-fitted Alfa 156 head unit with an after-market one, it sounds fine and functions well.  Anyway, I have it replaced recently for only 2 reasons:

  1. Its panel colour and silver appearance don’t blend in well with the amber backlit instruments
  2. I always fancy to have an old Nakamichi unit because of all the hypes of the vintage Nakamichi🙄. I know Macintosh is even better but…..you know

However, a new-old-stock vintage Nakamichi head unit is bloody expensive until I found an used one. Well it is still expensive, but I just bought it.

Hiccup of getting the head unit out

2 years ago, when I fixed the backlit of the air conditioner control unit, I had managed to take out the head unit. This time, no matter how hard I tried, it just stuck.  Alright, I raised the white flag and gave the job to professional.

Just 30 seconds, I learnt the reason why I failed this time.  I am so scared to making damage to the panel more now so that I am not willing to use “proper violence”.  All it takes is a flat-head screwdriver and force……😓

The result

Well, it is less fancy and with less effective vibration absorption resulting more tracks jumping when playing CD. However, it does offer much better sound and far better blending into the ambience of the Alfa 156 Sportpack II cabin, my opinion only of course.
