Alfa156 front brake system upgrade – part 4

With all the issues found from upgrading the front brake system to the gta 330mm, I narrowed my choices down to 2 solutions.

  1. replacing the knuckle with a gta one so that I can use the original caliper bracket
  2. replacing the entire system to a bolt-on 305mm system that is used on Mito QV

Having tried a few weeks looking for a gta knuckle, I had no luck to find one. I was not surprised, 156 gta is such a rare items and becoming a collection model. Supply of used gta specific parts are rare too. I decided to opt for the solution 2

The entire system is much lighter than the 330mm one. The lighter disc is the main source of the weight shed.

The original bracket is made of steel instead of aluminum, that adds a bit of weight back but it makes the entire system totally road legal. This saves me a lot of trouble for MOT.

Verdict of the 305mm front brake system upgrade

In my own opinions, the 305mm system is the most balanced front brake system upgrade option for Alfa 156 2.0. The system enhances the brake performance a lot. While the impact of the additional weight is very minimal if not none.

I’d have opted for this upgrade path if I had known this option before getting the 330mm system.

Other than using the Mito QV system, Brembo makes a similar system that is also 305mm and is a bolt-on solution. Its’ only difference from the Mito QV system is the shape of the caliper.

The only component that cannot be used from the Mito QV system is the brake disc as 156 uses 5 screws to fix the disc to the hub, Mito’s set uses 4 screws.
