The Log of maintenance, modification and ownership

Brake power faded

I felt the brake power faded about one week after installing the 305mm brake system, The brake pedal felt very soft when depressing and the rebound was slow. The first thing in my mind was: hell, I’ve just spent over 2000 pounds to get the caliper right with all the pain; what have I done to deserve all these……

Having checked the caliper, hoses, everything looked fine, no leak. Then I checked the brake fluid reservoir, the level is a bit low. However, the reservoir and the connecting hose were all good till I pointed the torch to the brake master cylinder. The surface of the cylinder was wet. With help from my brother, I saw brake fluid came out from the top of the cylinder. Gosh.

The location of the brake master cylinder just makes it unreachable with my hands of size and visual inspection could not tell me what’s wrong.

Have it towed to the garage, my mechanic master can barely reach the cylinder with his smaller hands. Finally he found the cause of the problem: it is connector of the master cylinder to the fluid reservoir broken.

I really don’t know how he had got it out. the cylinder deeply sits underneath the firewall and behind the top engine mound and intake manifold. I asked if it is likely to have the cylinder replaced or rebuilt, even my mechanic master scratched his head. Anyway, it seems impossible to find a new stock anymore, after a few years, I’m still trying.

The mechanic found me a similar component and fixed it immediately before I can get the proper parts that usually take weeks to arrive.

I did order the right parts as reserve. There are two connectors onto the cylinder. If one can fail, so can another one sooner or later. The feeling of brake power faded is definitely something that we don’t want to have.

Remarks:

The master brake cylinders used for different 156 models are different. The one used in this 2.0TS is no longer available.
