Alfa156 front brake system upgrade – Part 1

I always consider the factory-fitted Alfa156 front brake system on 2.0 cars is a bit soft and not powerful enough. And it became worse after I had fitted the new suspension because the improved handling gives me better confidence to go faster.

Asked for opinions from friends and looked for information from the Internet, the following is the most common suggestion:

  • Doing a full upgrade with 4-plot calipers, bigger discs, steel hoses and better pads
  • Upgrading the brake pad and disc

Considering that the previous owner has already upgraded the pad and disc from Project Mu, I decided that the full upgrade path is the one I should follow.

Upgrade alternative

Have the direction set, the next decision is to choose from the common alternatives:

  1. Upgrade to 156 GTA’s original 305mm kit
  2. Upgrade to 156 GTA’s upgraded 330mm kit
  3. Upgrade to AP/other aftermarket kits

At the very beginning, I wanted to follow option 1. It is because many 156 GTA owners have upgraded their brake system to the 330mm kit that there are some 305mm kits in the used parts market. After some further study, I aborted this option very soon for 2 reasons. Firstly, neither new nor used kits are cheap. Secondly, significant modification is needed to the brake caliper in order to make it fit to ordinary 156s. To me, the modification seems to weaken the bracket strength significantly.

AP’s reputation is extremely good but it is also extremely expensive……Moreover, I want to have the “Alfa Romeo” logo on the calipers. So option 2 is the path to go.

Things to consider before upgrade

  • To fit the 305/330mm kit, the wheel’s width must be 7.5J or above. That greatly increases the costs if a set of new wheels is needed. Using spacers can be a cheaper solution though
  • A pair of custom-made brackets is still needed

In my case, I upgraded both the brake and the wheel

These considerations are applicable to TS and 2.5 V.
