The Joyful Journey with My Alfa Romeo 156

The Log of maintenance, modification and ownership

Alfa156 overrun alternator pulley (OAP)

Replacing the simple pulley with an overrun alternator pulley has been a hot topic among Alfisti in Taiwan. However, I found little, if not none, information of getting a proper OAP for Alfa 156 on forums in Europe. Eventually, it took me two Taiwan trips to get the right one.

Upgrade the final gear

I tried upgrading the final gear to improve the torque at low rpm but failed. Details can be found here. I got another used gear box from a scrapped 2004 156 selespeed model. The new final gear ratio now is 3.73 vs 3.56 in the original box. According to Automobile Catalog, the 2 boxes are the same except the final gear. Provided that the 2003 model comes with higher power and more torque with its direct injection engine, Alfa Romeo still put a higher ratio final gear. To me, it seams that it is a reification to a weak spot of the series I 156.

Timing belt change

Timing belt replacement

Time flies. It has been 5 years since the last timing belt change. Gauged by the mileage, it is far below the factory recommended life span. However, I wanted to play safe and don’t want to suffer from the consequence of timing belt break down, I just went ahead to change it.
