High fuel consumption of my 156 has been puzzling me from day 1, the figure was about 100km/12.x liters or 22.6 mpg. It is high for a 2-liter engine here.

From a local Alfa fan club gathering, a friend suggested replacing the O2 sensors when we had talked about the fuel consumption issue.  I remembered that some discussions on car forums suggested something similar.

decaying o2 sensor causing high fuel consumption

The mechanic told me a piece of good news: I only need to replace 1 O2 sensor instead of 3 as mine is the CF2 version that saved me Euro 160.  Great!

At the same time, I replaced the old battery too.

Does it work to improve the high fuel consumption?

After a year with the new O2 sensor installed, the fuel consumption did drop about 8% on average. The figure was 100km/11.x liters or 24.6 mpg. It is still not there yet but 8% is a significant improvement. So replacing the old o2 sensor is worthy.
