Without any alert, the door button on the passenger-side door did not do its work. The door didn’t open with the button pressed and I felt nothing when the button is pressed on.

Loose door button on Alfa Romeo 156

Luckily, the door can be opened from inside the compartment, it indicates that the lock is fine but something wrong inside the panel.

Removing door panel

Without choices, removing the door panel is a must. At that time, I found a detailed instruction about removing the door panel of 156. It is not a difficult task. Unfortunately, the web site from which I got the instruction is no longer available. Instead, I found the following video clip from Youtube telling how to get the job done.

Remove water-proof foam sheet

Once the panel is off, the next step is to remove the water-proof foam sheet that sits between the panel and the door frame. Since the original sheet is in good condition, I carefully cut thought the glue with a sharp cutter so that I can used it again.

Fixing the loose door button

With the foam sheet off, I can look into the panel to find the problem. In my case, it is the linking rod popped off from the insert of the button. It is easy to hooking the rod hooked back. However, I’ve no idea why the problem has occurred and no preventive measure can be done.

Things to note:

  • I suggest having the glue ready to glue the water-proof foam sheet back. Since the material used is not normal plastic, it seems that some special kind of adhesive is needed. Some people use silicon sealant for the job but I’m not sure if it works. I used the old glue and just stuck the sheet back, it holds. To do it this way, great attention needs to be paid when removing the sheet. Indeed, removing the water-proof foam sheet is the most time consuming part of the job.
  • I also took the chance to do some preventive maintenance. That is to lubricate the track of the window regulator. As expected, the grease was old and deteriorated, guess that it has been there for more than 10 years. I cleaned the grease on the track and the wire, then added new synthetic grease back. Since then the window has been working smoothly and quietly
