Replace Alfa156 airbag ECU

I’m very used to seeing the Alfa 156 airbag warning indicator lit up. Usually, the problem is caused by one of the loosely contacted airbag connectors. Resetting it with the software in most cases will solve the problem. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work this time and the error message indicated something else.

The error code cannot be cleared even after I sprayed contact cleaner to the airbag ECU connectors. I reckon the ECU died.

This is the second time I had to replace an airbag system component. The challenge of finding the replacement is that Alfa uses different airbag ECUs for different models across the production year of 156. Therefore, exact model is needed to ensure getting the successful solution.

I managed to find the exact parts from the UK. Replacing the Alfa156 airbag ECU is easy. The ECU is located under the air box of the air conditioning system. To access it, I only needed to put off the left and the right decorative cards of the central dash.

The ECU sits here with 3 screws fixing it on the floor.

It took a few seconds to figure out how to disconnect the ECU. Just don’t use force to pull it out, otherwise, it could be a nightmare to fix the broken connector or replace the harness.

It is a 15-min job to replace the Alfa156 airbag ECU. Nevertheless, I was crossing my fingers when I tried clearing the error code. A big yes, it worked.

No clue why the ECU died so suddenly. And from the online forum, many said airbag ECUs are not repairable. Albeit I found a lot of airbag ECU repair services on the Internet. I know some of them indeed only reset the ECU that has fired up airbag(s) before, they reset the fire up counter back to zero so that the ECU would work again. For others’ service listing, I’m not so sure if they works. As long as I can find an used one. I prefer the used parts from reputable sellers.
