My mechanic suggested to me that it was time to replace the spark plug on my Alfa 156. Following his suggestion, I decided to examine all ignition components. As a result, the findings are quite alarming.

Alfa 156 ignition coil and HT cable after 20 years service

After its 20-year service, the body of the ignition coil started cracking. I wonder if there is electrical arcing happening. Without any hesitation, I ordered the following parts to renew the entire ignition system:

  • Ignition coil
  • Coil plugs for main spark plugs
  • HT cable set for small spark plugs

In 3 days, all parts arrived

New alfa 156 ignition components

Replacing all these is for sure a DIYable job. It took me less than an hour to finish the replacement. One key tip is to taking a picture of the existing HT cable connection that will make the re-installation much easier.

The condition of the spark plug is not too bad but why not to use new plugs with the new ignition components.

With all the new component, as expected, I felt that the engine runs smoother and slightly more powerful. I would suggest that treating all these components as consumable items and replacing them regularly. The reward is well worth the cost.
